Locabulary is an iPhone app developed for augmentative and alternative communication. Words and phrases are made available based on your GPS location. Custom lists of phrases can be stored on the iPhone, and also in the Locabulary Cloud, so you never have to worry about losing your hard work. You can also share lists with others, and download lists they've shared. With Locabulary, you can easily speak the right words in the right place.
Locabulary began as part of an Alabama state grant project, funded by the Alabama Council for Developmental Disabilities (ACDD). Push Product Design was asked to explore concepts for iPhone apps that could be helpful to people living with disabilites. Several ideas came from the initial grant, but the one that gained the most traction was a text to speech device that used the iPhone GPS to show the right words at the right places.
After the ACDD grant, Locabulary was mostly an idea with a very basic version of the app released to the app store. Another grant, provided by the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS), allowed us to take Locabulary all the way to a fully functioning communication iPhone application.
